I wouldn't paint it, I have had bad experiences with painting furniture before. One technique you may want to consider is dying. I did a real nice AR15 stock set using Ryt dye. Started with a white stock set and dyed it medium gray, next masked of the pattern with duct tape (tape MUST be water-proof), then drak gray, mask of final pattern then dye black. The final set looked good with a nice blurring along the edges of color. The nice thing is that the USR and AUG furniture takes dye much better than the less porous AR stuff (ask me how I know). Just trying to give you other options, let me know if you need more detailed instructions. Good luck.
